Sam parked the car in a spot as close as she could get to the hospital entrance and put the sign on the dashboard, ‘police officer on duty’. Sometimes it worked, depending on whether the car park attendant was in a generous mood or not.

She asked at reception which ward Sophie had been taken to, something she’d neglected to ask Ruby on the phone earlier. The receptionist gave them directions to the Women’s Ward which was on the second level.

Sam smiled at the nurse and showed her ID. “Hi, we’re here to have a chat with Sophie Meskill. I checked with Ruby earlier and arranged to come at ten-thirty.”

“Ruby did mention you were on your way. Sophie is a little groggy this morning, so please, be gentle with her.”

“Of course, that goes without saying.”

“The bed with the curtains drawn.” The nurse pointed down the ward at the last bed on the left.

“Thanks. We should be out of your hair soon.”

“No problem. Hope all goes well, that woman has been through a terrible ordeal.”

Sam nodded and walked ahead of Bob down the ward. Feeling awkward, Sam poked her head around the curtain. “Hi, Ruby, Sophie. Is it all right to come in?”

“Please do. I’ll see if I can grab another chair,” Ruby said. “Here, take mine for now.”

“No, sit there. Bob can source another one, I’ll sit over here.”

Bob left and returned a few moments later. He placed his chair on the other side of the bed, next to Sam’s. “How are you this morning, Sophie?”

“Honestly?”

Sam nodded.

“Everything is a bit of a blur. I was restless last night, so they knocked me out, and it has left me with a very thick head. You’ll have to forgive me if I’m not at my best.”

“Don’t worry. I’m not going to push you, however, we’re going to need to know a little about what you went through. I didn’t want to bombard you with questions in the car on the journey here last night.”

“Thank you. I think I was in shock.” She shuddered and clasped her arms around her body.

Ruby dipped into the bedside cupboard. She removed a cardigan and placed it around Sophie’s shoulders. “We’ll soon get you warmed up.”

“Thanks, love.”

Sam could see the love in both women’s eyes, and it gladdened her heart that the outcome, on this occasion, had been a good one, unlike the first victim.

“In your own time, can you go over what happened?”

“I’ll try. I don’t think I’ll be good on times and the finer details, so you’ll need to forgive me for that.”

“Just tell us what you can remember. There’s no pressure to get all the facts right at this stage, we can revisit anything we need to at a later date.”

“Okay. I was at the gym. I said goodbye to my friends and split from them. They were parked up the road, but I chose to park in the gym’s car park. Thinking about it, maybe I should have left the car under a streetlight instead; it was fairly dark where I left it.
