Chapter Twenty-Four
Sunday morning once again saw the sky a cloudless blue. His original idea had been to wait until Jun got to Cheng’s apartment, but Oberman’s tech specialist had forced a rethink on that. Not only did Freddie no longer have any cameras in place, but for all he knew, the tech guy had substituted them with his own, which could make turning up at Cheng’s apartment a calamitous decision.
Fortunately, he knew that Jun generally arrived a little before eleven, he knew the U-Bahn station she came in on, the route she took from there to Cheng’s apartment. It would be harder to explain what he had to tell her in the street, but it would be safer for Freddie, maybe for both of them.
He found a café on the first street she walked along after leaving the U-Bahn. It was already busy, with people sitting outside in the sun, albeit wrapped up against the crisp edge to the morning air. Freddie took a table just inside, looking out through the window, invisible.
He’d been there about twenty minutes when Wei Jun walked past, pulling along the usual small suitcase, but this time with an extra bag on top of it. She looked composed and content, with something about her expression that reminded him of Cheng. And clearly, she had no idea what she was walking toward.
He waited another minute, wanting to be sure she wasn’t already being followed. Then he left, looking first one way as he stepped out of the café, making sure no one was trailing her from a distance, then turning in the direction she was walking. He couldn’t see her, but he was confident of catching her.
He set off along the street, turned the corner, still no sign, but before he reached the next corner he could already hear the sound of the suitcase wheels on the paving stones. He saw her as he rounded the corner, and picked up his pace until he was only twenty yards behind her.
At some level he didn’t want to stop her, didn’t want to destroy that composure and contentment. She was still, in her own mind, heading toward something happy, and it wasn’t Freddie who’d destroyed that happiness, but that’s how it would seem to her.
But she was nearing the next corner, and would soon be in sight of Cheng’s building, so he had no choice but to act now.
“Jun!”
She stopped and turned, confused, perhaps not sure that she’d heard her own name called out. She looked ready to accept she’d been mistaken, so Freddie raised his hand in a wave and called again. “Jun!”
She smiled uncertainly. Maybe she thought it was someone who knew her, one of the local tour guides or someone from one of the places she regularly visited. The smile became even more fragile as he got closer and she failed to identify the face.
She was beautiful, slender and with flawless skin and big eyes, and younger than Cheng, he thought, maybe only thirty. Even
