Chapter 14

Lydia checked her watch as Anna steered her boat into the current. She smiled when she realized she’d be home in time for dinner with Al. He had promised chicken and biscuits.

Shortly after they passed Fools Gold Creek, Lydia saw another boat ahead of them. As they got closer, Lydia realized that they were coming upon High Arctic. She also realized that there were now three people in the craft, Sam and two others. Once again Lydia signaled Anna to slow down. “Pass that boat slowly and take a good look at the passengers. I’ve got to keep my head down. I don’t want to be recognized.”

Anna nodded, gave her boat more gas, and passed High Arctic on the left. She smiled and waved as Lydia rummaged around on the bottom of the boat as if looking for something. Then Anna gunned the engine, took the next bend, and slowed down. “The passenger in the bow is a woman, heavy-set, her hair in braids. There’s tall, skinny guy in the middle seat. The guy at the throttle has curly dark hair.”

“Okay,” said Lydia. “Go slow and let that boat pass us.” She pulled her hat down to obscure her face. A few minutes later she heard the sound of an outboard. It got louder then softer as it proceeded upstream.

“Give them another few minutes, then we’re going back to Fools Gold Creek,” said Lydia.

“You’re shittin’ me,” said Anna. “Why would we do that?”

“Sam’s passengers are Adam and Eve Bullock. I want to go back up to their place and see what’s going on up there. I prefer to do that when they’re not home.”

“Oh, for God sake. Last time you went up there somebody shot at you.”

“That, dear friend, is why I want to go when nobody’s home. There’s something weird going on up there. Those miners are excessively hostile to visitors, but they’re friends with Sam. Sam’s been busted for dealing pot. Sam’s boat is called High Arctic. Gold mining hasn’t been lucrative. Maybe the three of them have embarked on a new enterprise.”

“Okay, so they’re growing pot. What do you care?”

“I don’t care. But what if Teddy found it?”

“You think the Bullocks killed Teddy because they’re growing weed!”

Lydia looked down at her boots. “Actually, I know that they didn’t kill Teddy. They have a strong alibi. But they ran her off and they ran me off and I want to know why. It’s all connected somehow.”

“You drive me nuts,” said Anna. But she made a wide U turn and headed back downstream. They were at the confluence of Fools Gold Creek and the Yukon in a few minutes.

“Go as far upstream as you can,” said Lydia as Anna steered the boat into the creek.

They passed Jack Marsh’s elegant craft and two rental canoes piled high with dry bags, bear canisters, and a Coleman stove. None of it was strapped in. “Idiots,” muttered Lydia.

The battered skiff with the tiny outboard that Lydia had seen on her last visit was tucked between two fallen logs.
