CHAPTER 7

She had been watching from a distance for a while now, having arrived at the location at the same time as the woman’s relatives had, en masse, which had pissed her off. She was in two minds whether to drive off and return another day, but killers had to go by instinct, and tonight, she had the feeling that this would be the right time to end the woman’s life. Her insides twisted into a bigger knot the more she waited, though. She’d already wasted two hours of her evening. How much longer was she supposed to wait, or be prepared to wait?

Turning the key in the ignition, she growled, disappointed that she would need to leave, but more importantly, that her killer instinct or enthusiasm would need to be parked to one side for the evening. It wasn’t her fault that the woman’s dumb family had showed up. She should have been relieved that she wasn’t already inside the woman’s house when the family arrived. That would have been another close shave she could do without.

A grin emerged as she reflected on her previous encounter. He was a dish, the victim’s son. Had she met him elsewhere, she would have been tempted to take things further with him. As it was, her need to get away from the crime scene far outweighed her need to get laid.

Her interest piqued. The front door had opened, and two children left the house and were playing chase in the front garden and out onto the pavement. The younger female was next, followed by the male. He stopped to give the old lady a kiss on both cheeks. She was beaming, happy to see her family.

Pretending to be studying a map, Jennifer kept one eye on the family. The woman waved her relatives off and then went back into the house.

Jennifer waited until the family left the area and there was no one else hanging around to see her enter the house. She knew this evening’s job would be a swift one. She had a time restraint hanging around her neck tonight; she had to meet up with Phil later to discuss other hits they had lined up. With the coast now all clear, she left the driver’s seat and removed her trusty bag from the boot then trotted across the road to the house. With a disarming smile in place, she rang the bell and waited patiently.

The woman took her time opening the door. “Oh, I know you, don’t I?”

“That’s right. I have a few queries about the last transaction you made with us and thought I’d drop by in person to run through them with you.”

“Ah, that sounds like a good idea. I get far too flustered discussing my finances over the phone. Come in, sorry, I’ve forgotten your name?”

“It’s Jennifer, Mrs Davidson.”

“Call me Karen, Mrs Davidson sounds too formal even to my ears. Would you like a drink? I’ve just this second made a pot of tea. My family visited earlier and drained me.
