Chapter 20

X ander had to take care of a few things, but said he would meet us in one of the training buildings after my procedure. Chase was walking me there and I was trying desperately not to freak out. I was wrapping the end of my braid around my finger over and over again, a nervous habit from when I was a kid, when Chase broke the silence.

"Penny for your thoughts?"

I snorted. "Funny coming from a telepath.”

“Hey, I promised you were muted. You’re muted until you tell me otherwise.” I actually believed him surprisingly – I knew very few guys who would keep that kind of promise.

I let out a long breath. I wasn’t sure I could voice my concerns quite yet, so I shook my head and changed the subject instead, asking, “how old are you anyway?”

“26. I know, you don’t have to tell me – I look amazing for my age,” he replied with his dumb crooked smile.

I rolled my eyes but felt myself relaxing a bit. His nonchalance just kind of rubbed off on you whenever you were around him – it wasn’t a Cad, but right then, I considered it a superpower.

“How long have you been part of the Resistance?”

His smile faded slightly. “About five and a half years – not long before the War ended.” I sensed there was more to that story, but he wasn’t forthcoming and it wasn’t my place to ask.

He started humming and I gave him a sidelong look. “Are you seriously humming Taylor Swift right now?”

“It’s your theme song.” He crooned, “I knew you were trouble when you walked innnn.”

“Oh my God, I don’t think we can be friends anymore,” I said, laughing. It wasn’t quite a full laugh, but it was a laugh. Babysteps, Fin. He did have a nice singing voice, I’d give him that.

His hands flew to his chest. “That wounds me deeply. Taylor was the songbird of her generation, ok?”

“Yeah, ok seriously, can you walk at least 20 feet away from me at all times now. K, thanks.” My lips tugged into a small smile.

We walked through the house and out of the back door to wind through the brick paths that connected all of the buildings on the property. They were kind of set up in a rectangle shape with a large courtyard in the middle – about the size of a football field – where a group was currently doing some kind of workout. My antsy feeling was starting to kick in, but I realized with a start that this would be the last time that would happen. I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. My “condition” had been such a big part of my life for so long that I wasn’t sure how I would feel with it gone. Happy I guessed because I could stop all the cardio – damn, did that mean I had to start actually watching what I ate? – but a little sad at the same time.
