CORDELIA: And by intuition you mean the clock you just mentioned chiming?

DUNCAN: That had nothing to do with it. I’m very in tune with the world around me.

CORDELIA: Says the dragon who didn’t know the sun rose in the east and set in the west until a few days ago.

DUNCAN: I don’t see how that’s pertinent to this conversation.

Cordelia was right, though. Pepper would be closing up soon, and since I didn’t want to eat leftover popcorn and cotton candy for dinner, I went with my handler to the Cantina. There, we found Boris at one of the tables, distractedly eating as he checked things off on a sheet he was studying intently.

Pepper raised her single eyebrow when I told her I only wanted a fried egg sandwich. Cordelia then shot me an inquiring look when, once I had my sandwich in hand, I told her I’d meet up with her in a bit.

See, ever since we’d finished talking to Prince, I’d felt an acute need to scout around Ella’s caravan. Despite Boris’s doubts that there would be anything more to detect there, I had to see for myself.

Worried about destroying whatever slim evidence might be waiting to be discovered, I finished my sandwich and brushed all crumbs from my paws before getting to work. I then stalked the perimeter of the caravan, tiptoeing in ever-tightening circles as my wings fluttered for balance.

Not wanting to miss a thing, I didn’t even dare to blink as I scanned the ground for footprints, a dropped scrap of clothing, a big sign announcing who did it, and of course, coins, jewels, and precious metals. What can I say? You can take a dragon away from his hoard, but you can’t stop him from wanting to add to it.

Boris was right, the grassy turf made finding any footprints impossible, but as I neared the caravan, I found several strands of long, blonde hair. I plucked them from the blades of grass and wished I’d brought along a handkerchief like Humphrey had used to wrap the bottle in. Really, if bodies were going to keep popping up around here, I should put together a detective kit and fill it with investigative supplies.

I was about to step up to the door, when, to its side, I caught sight of something that made my heart sink. I plucked it up and added it to my other evidence.

I then worked on getting inside the caravan. Which, given the doorknob, wasn’t going to be easy. My paws are fairly dexterous, but the long claws do make it tough to grasp round, smooth objects. However, dragon determination saw me through, and eventually, I prevailed.
