10…g5!

A revolutionary idea, especially in those times. Even though Black seemed to have opted for a quiet variation of the Ruy Lopez, suddenly, out of nowhere, he starts an attack on the white king. Today, the text move is still considered correct. Ivan Sokolov, a great admirer of Spassky’s play, used it twice almost half a century later, and with success.

11.g4?

White tries to keep the g-file closed, but as a result the h-file is opened, with much direr consequences for White. Better is 11.♘f1 g4 12.hxg4 ♗xg4 13.♘1h2, as Evans played a month later against Sherwin in the American Championship.
