Chapter 12

I poked my head out the door to make sure the coast was clear before stepping out into the hallway. I gently closed the door behind me and leaned against it.

“I need you to stay here, Rex, and keep an eye on things. Right now, Dr. Stark is here, and both Nurse Shue and Stew are on the second floor. I need you to keep an eye out for them and monitor their every move.”

Aye aye, Captain. As you command.

I closed my eyes and grounded myself to see if I could sense where Dr. Stark was. I was tempted to sneak into his office and see if I could find a clue. I mean, it’s not like I thought he’d leave a bottle of whatever drug he used to zap Mac with, but there might be something I could use to prove his guilt.

I let out a frustrated sigh when hordes of weakened energies washed over me. There were too many emotions and leftover imprints of tortured souls down in the dungeon for me to get a true reading of where someone might be.

“Rex, go see if Nurse Lohman is behind the nurses station.”

Rex stood up on his hind legs, clicked them together, and took off up the stairs. I crept slowly down the hallway in the opposite direction toward what I presumed was Dr. Stark’s office. There were only two other rooms—except for the boiler room door—that was left to explore in the east wing.

I was about to push Dr. Stark’s door open with a swipe of my hand when Rex somersaulted down the stairs, his little body splatting against the wall. He got up, shook himself, and turned toward me.

Hide! Hide! He’s coming!

Pushing Dr. Stark’s door open, I leaped over the threshold and looked around for a place to hide. There were only two bulky items in the room: his desk and a tall, metal storage container.

I yanked open the double doors of the storage unit. It was a small closet. There were two long lab coats, an umbrella, and a set of casual clothes hanging on a wire hanger. I jumped inside and slid my hand backward to close the door. Inhaling slowly, I tried to stabilize my breathing. Counting to five slowly, I centered myself…and nearly jumped out of my skin when the office door slammed shut. A few seconds later I heard wheels screech, springs rock, and a fist slam down on the metal desk.

Obviously the doc’s not having a good day.

“Well, Dad, it’s been twelve years,” Dr. Stark said bitterly. “Twelve years and it still haunts me.”

There was a knock on the door.

“What?” Dr. Stark growled.

“I’m sorry to bother you, Dr. Stark, but you’re needed again upstairs.”

I recognized Nurse Lohman’s voice.

“I’ll be right there,” Dr. Stark said.

“Of course, doctor.”

The door closed quietly, and I waited impatiently for Dr. Stark to leave. A drawer closed, and then finally the click of his office door sounded. I waited another thirty seconds just for good measure.

He’s gone! He’s gone.
