Sophia stared at Liam in panic. No way she could do these dances any justice. She’d make a fool of herself. But the dancers looked like they were having so much fun. She gathered up her courage, took his hand, and said, “I’d love to.”

He tugged her out of her seat and sent her spinning onto the dance floor. Just when she thought she would wind up sprawled on the floor, he reeled her back in. She crashed into his chest and held on, giggling uncontrollably. “I’m sorry. I haven’t danced in a very long time. I have no idea what I’m doing,” she gasped out when she could get enough air in her lungs.

“Perfect. Neither do I.” He smiled and her laughter faltered. Heat suffused her entire body.

They weren’t pressed up against each other. Not like they would be at a club or a place like Royce’s. Somehow, the inch or so separating them made their closeness even hotter. His firm grip on her hand, the weight and warmth of his other hand at her waist… all perfectly innocent and infinitely sexy. Every inch of her body was attuned to his. The slightest touch sent sparks through her skin. Had he grabbed her butt or tried to feel her up, she’d be immediately turned off. But the gentle and respectful way he held her sparked her senses into overdrive.

Okay. She could do this. “I’ll follow your lead then.” Her voice came out somewhat strangled, but hopefully he wouldn’t notice over the music.

His own breathing sounded a little labored. Because of her? She hoped so. How disappointing if he set off sparks within her like crazy but she did nothing for him.

Now was not the time. They were on a crowded dance floor, which grew by the minute. She shouldn’t be wishing they were alone, but couldn’t help her hormones.

As they twirled around doing a decent approximation of the dancing, she considered where this would lead. Up to her room? Did women do that in this time, or would she be branded a slut and have to face the consequences of a judgmental society?

“We’re not through,” a voice whispered in her ear.

She froze in fear. Before she could turn to see who had spoken, a rough hand shoved her between the shoulder blades and she crashed into Liam. He caught her, sliding his arms around her. Once she was steady, he held onto her arms and a little away as he gazed down. “Are you all right? We probably should have quit the dance floor a while ago. It’s gotten much too crowded.”

He stepped back, but she couldn’t let him go. “It was him.”

“Him? Who?” Liam’s head swiveled as he studied the room.

She tugged his arm, and he followed her into a relatively quiet corner. She shook so bad she could hardly speak. “Him. One of the men who stole my purse. I-I recognized his voice.”

He brought his head down so they were level, and his voice turned hard and urgent.
