Inside, Sam hastily placed the dishes in the sink and filled it with soapy water. He was half dreading going upstairs, at the same time as being desperate to help because he knew that Joe would be hurting. Sam also felt guilty and responsible because after all, he had egged Joe on in his pursuit of Tilly.

Turning off the tap, Sam dried his hands and made his way up the stairs. When he reached the bunk room door, he took a deep breath, knocked gently and went inside, not giving his brother chance to tell him to go away or that he wanted to be alone. Joe was lying on the bottom bunk, his hands behind his head, staring intently at the wooden laths on the bed above. He didn’t even acknowledge Sam’s entrance.

Slightly unnerved by the silence yet resolute in his task, Sam sat on the bunk opposite and said the first words that came to mind.

‘So, what’s going on, mate?’

Joe turned his head slowly to face his brother and let out a huge sigh, and then told Sam everything.
