Chapter 16

Darion leaned his head against his steering wheel and let out a long sigh. He was feeling drained that day. After spending the morning doing amphibious exercises with his tactical team, he’d returned to his car. As worn out as he felt, he was glad it was from the exercises and not due to a health issue. He was thankful Remi had stopped him from overheating. Tolrek supporting him every step of the way made a quick recovery possible.

He lifted his head from the steering wheel, planning to drive home and continue working from there. He activated his car’s autopilot and was about to leave the parking garage. The screen on his console flickered. Scrolling across the screen were the words, “Our favorite dancer helped me. I put a package under your seat. You know how to open it. I’m sorry I had to do it this way. Open the package with the date we left the program.”

The only person Darion knew who’d send such a message was Rijlan Arkaius. Darion shook his head at Rijlan’s boldness. Once Darion’s Sentinel status had become official, he’d received a car with the most advanced security system. He’d normally report Rijlan’s breach of that security, but he guessed Marisa was also involved. There would be no trace of anything illicit because Marisa was just that good. He planned to talk to both her and Rijlan about their methods. For now, he was curious about what was in the package.

He reached under his seat, searching until he found a metal disk. A holographic numerical panel appeared above it. Darion thought of when he’d finally left the Meridian Program. He entered the date, as images of that time swirled in his head. The code activated Rijlan’s message: “Trying to break away. Need help. Here are peace offerings.”

The information packet contained three files. The first one had footage of a room with fifteen metal and glass tanks filled with liquid. Two of the tanks had figures floating in them with their eyes closed. Darion recognized the tanks as similar to the type he’d recovered in after severe injuries. An individual in a third tank had placed a hand against the glass. A moment later, that hand turned into a fist. “Ariston of House Diadein” scrolled across the screen.

The second file was titled “Vyncent of House Amehdor vs Reimon of House Diadein, with Ariston of House Diadein intervening.” In the video, a masked fighter named Vyncent competed against an opponent named Reimon. After what looked like a particularly brutal right punch, Reimon stumbled to the mat, momentarily stunned. Vyncent pounced on him, mercilessly battering him, even as a referee tried to stop the fight. An individual identified as Ariston scrambled into the ring to attack Vyncent. Ariston had to be pulled away by five people. The camera zoomed in on Ariston. A green pattern appeared on his skin, but quickly faded.

Darion stroked his jaw, thinking of the fighter named Ariston. The pattern on Ariston’s skin reminded him of Tolrek.
