I did everything I could to maintain control and a good face at work, and I was mostly successful. However, my personal problems soon became public gossip, and there I was having discussions with the CEO about how to handle the fallout.

The CEO was ecstatic about my plight and clearly enjoyed the situation. There was lots of sympathetic posturing, but it was clear what was going on in his mind.

He and I had disagreed on several critical issues in previous months and occasionally the board had overruled his choices and insisted he make decisions consistent with my advice.

He was the CEO and I was second-in-command so generally the decisions were his to make and mine to advise. I made my advice and reasoning clear, but after the decisions, I never undermined the path forward. But that did not lessen the acrimony he felt at having lost some battles.

In addition, he did not like the national prominence and attention that had been paid to me during the formation of the company.

My personal turmoil presented an opportunity to solve this inconvenience.

About a year went by in this difficult work situation. It became increasingly obvious that the CEO was trying to structure things to ‘help’ me leave the company so that I would no longer be a thorn in his side.

Ultimately, it seemed to me that leaving was probably for the best.

I had achieved national prominence and I knew that there would be something else I could do without too much trouble. Six months before the turmoil started I had already had two other job offers.

I considered leaving at that time but the chairman of the Board of Directors asked me to stay, again against the wishes of the CEO. That had really irritated the CEO since they had gone around him again.

I left and immediately got a private consulting contract making even more money. The money was never the problem.
