Whenever people learn self-defense, I also recommend that they become familiar with the legal realities. This is not the cool part, but, everyone should know the self-defense laws in their country. The laws can vary dramatically from country to country, and if you are in the United States, from state to state.
Most places do have the principle that you can only use force that is proportional to the situation or threat. For example, if someone slaps you, you can not shoot them. Another principle is, just because someone insults you verbally, or says something that you donât like, you canât physically attack them. Finally, if you do become highly trained in any martial art, the courts will usually hold you to a higher standard of responsibility.
