Chapter 12

A Dagger

They’d almost made it past the Desert Isles, there was one last island, the largest of the collection of landmasses, and after that a stretch of open water, the beginnings of the Forest Lands, and then the Bay of Mountains. Not far now. It was on this last island that they had paused, still with merchandise to sell. Tristan had gone off into town to barter, along with a few other members of the crew who wanted to explore the town and make the most of shore leave. Lily had managed to convince Jim to do some sparring with her so she had stayed on board The Shadow – she never grew bored of practicing her sword skills.

“Good parry – now back straighter, and make sure to watch the eyes, they can give away a lot.” Lily adjusted her posture as Jim had suggested before hitting out with the butt of the sword, catching Jim on the arm. He rubbed at it, staring at her indignantly.

“Will you stop using the swords as knuckle dusters?”

Lily shrugged, a grin playing on her face, “I’m better at fist fighting.”

“I know, but right now you’re learning sword fighting – use the blade not the butt!”

Out of the corner of her eye Lily saw Marco and Milo approaching. Jim lowered his sword and Lily did the same, turning properly. The twins nodded at them in greeting.

“Mind if we have a go?” Marco asked.

“Have a go at what?” Jim narrowed his eyes in suspicion.

“Look, Tigerlily needs more experience than scrapping with a puppy if she is to fight alongside this crew.”

“I’ve told you about calling me puppy!” Jim raised his voice, and it broke slightly.

“Was that supposed to be a threat?” Marco sized up to Jim with a grin, who met his gaze defiantly.

“Jim leave it.” Lily warned.

“No, not this time.” Jim growled. He flexed his fists, and raised them to his face, “He’s had this coming a long time.”

“Careful puppy, you’re biting off more than you can chew.” Marco growled.

“Don’t call me that!” Jim swung his fist but Marco dodged the blow easily. Lily rolled her eyes. Marco made to hit back but Lily was quicker, she grabbed his fist before it struck, and swung his arm back behind his back, twisting it to her control.

“What the hell?” Marco moaned, straining at Lily’s grip – but she knew he wouldn’t be able to swing out of this hold. “If you’re going to get it out of your system, then you can at least fight properly.”

“We were!” Jim protested.

“No, your punches are crap.” Marco laughed in her grip, “Yours aren’t much better Marco, and you still haven’t managed to get out of my grip.” He strained now, to no avail – Lily released him. He rubbed at his wrist, warily regarding her. Jim smirked, but was quick to wipe off his grin when Lily looked at him.

Big Henry pushed through the little crowd that had gathered at the fight. “Tigerlily, why is it that
