We spend the better part of the day driving to all of Santino Toscaniâs old haunts. Despite intelligence telling us he hasnât been seen in weeks, Iâm not convinced. If Garza is right, and he is behind all these killings, then he is close. And if heâs not, then heâs just another target, like Drummond.
His warehouse, which sits in the industrial area of town, is a bust. We pull up, and even though the warehouse is running business as usual, thereâs no sign of Santino. Iâm actually surprised and a little suspicious, how easy it is for us to get in, considering the treatment weâve received the other times weâve tried coming here. And given Zara and I were never Santinoâs favorite people, I figured he would have put an embargo on us ever entering his warehouse again.
But his people let us in, escort us around, and even allow us to examine the place on our own. Itâs a huge warehouse, and there are any number of places Santino could hide, but heâs not that kind of person. He wouldnât be holed up in some little storage room. No, heâd be in his office, projecting the kind of strength he thinks he needs to maintain control of this organization.
Somehow, I just know heâs not going to be there. They wouldnât be that open and transparent if he were. Iâm always suspicious of people who are too anxious to help us out. Kind of like Garza. Generally, people are altruistic, but not so with the kind of people we tend to deal with.
Next, we head downtown to places Santino is known to frequent to see if anyone has seen him lately. After a lot of interviews and greasing a few wheels, we find that Intelligence was right. Thereâs been no sign of the man for weeks.
Finally, even though I know itâs fruitless, we head to his home outside the city. Itâs a gated property but the service staff let us in. A quick conversation with them reveals they donât know when heâll be back, only that heâs been gone since the end of February.
âI donât like any of this,â I tell Zara as we head back to my car after doing a thorough check of the Toscani estate. âWhy would he just up and leave his company and everything else behind? Taking over the business from his uncle would have been very lucrativeâone way or another.â
âMaybe he just decided to take a vacation,â Zara suggests. âHeâs certainly rich enough.â
âAnd then all of these murders happen while heâs away?â I ask. âNo, something is definitely wrong. We need to bring Garza back in. Show him more mugshots, see if he can identify the man he saw that night.â
âHeâs never going to be a credible witness,â she says, checking her phone. âHeâs a crack addict who may or may not be high when we interview him again. Maybe he did see something, but he could just make it all up to waste our time.
