We spend the better part of the day driving to all of Santino Toscani’s old haunts. Despite intelligence telling us he hasn’t been seen in weeks, I’m not convinced. If Garza is right, and he is behind all these killings, then he is close. And if he’s not, then he’s just another target, like Drummond.

His warehouse, which sits in the industrial area of town, is a bust. We pull up, and even though the warehouse is running business as usual, there’s no sign of Santino. I’m actually surprised and a little suspicious, how easy it is for us to get in, considering the treatment we’ve received the other times we’ve tried coming here. And given Zara and I were never Santino’s favorite people, I figured he would have put an embargo on us ever entering his warehouse again.

But his people let us in, escort us around, and even allow us to examine the place on our own. It’s a huge warehouse, and there are any number of places Santino could hide, but he’s not that kind of person. He wouldn’t be holed up in some little storage room. No, he’d be in his office, projecting the kind of strength he thinks he needs to maintain control of this organization.

Somehow, I just know he’s not going to be there. They wouldn’t be that open and transparent if he were. I’m always suspicious of people who are too anxious to help us out. Kind of like Garza. Generally, people are altruistic, but not so with the kind of people we tend to deal with.

Next, we head downtown to places Santino is known to frequent to see if anyone has seen him lately. After a lot of interviews and greasing a few wheels, we find that Intelligence was right. There’s been no sign of the man for weeks.

Finally, even though I know it’s fruitless, we head to his home outside the city. It’s a gated property but the service staff let us in. A quick conversation with them reveals they don’t know when he’ll be back, only that he’s been gone since the end of February.

“I don’t like any of this,” I tell Zara as we head back to my car after doing a thorough check of the Toscani estate. “Why would he just up and leave his company and everything else behind? Taking over the business from his uncle would have been very lucrative—one way or another.”

“Maybe he just decided to take a vacation,” Zara suggests. “He’s certainly rich enough.”

“And then all of these murders happen while he’s away?” I ask. “No, something is definitely wrong. We need to bring Garza back in. Show him more mugshots, see if he can identify the man he saw that night.”

“He’s never going to be a credible witness,” she says, checking her phone. “He’s a crack addict who may or may not be high when we interview him again. Maybe he did see something, but he could just make it all up to waste our time.
