Rochester Close, Kilton, Worksop, Nottinghamshire

Doug Richardson had waited for Mike Molloy to leave his office in Worksop town centre. He had then followed the private detective to what appeared to be his home address on Rochester Close.

Molloy had parked his battered Ford Fiesta on the drive of the property and used a key to get inside. Richardson thought it safe to assume it was the man’s home. He had then waited patiently at the end of the cul de sac, pondering his next move.

On two previous occasions, he’d dialled the telephone number in the handwritten note that had been posted to his own home. Both times had been from a pay phone and on both occasions, he’d hung up before the call was answered.

Something inside him told him that Molloy, armed with the knowledge of his involvement in the suspicious death of Ian Drake, was going to attempt to extort large sums of money from him. He also believed the private detective wouldn’t settle for just one payment.

He knew if he met him and paid him off, it would only be a matter of time before the slime ball would be back for more money.

At the same time, he couldn’t afford to ignore the situation and do nothing. When he’d been ordered by the gangster, Mason Connor, to find someone who could trace Ian Drake, he had never dreamed he would find himself in the middle of this shitstorm. Drake was now dead, possibly murdered by the person who had approached Mason Connor for help in finding him. All the police knew was that Molloy had been hired to locate Drake. Right now, they didn’t know who had hired the private detective. Richardson couldn’t take the risk of that information getting out. He knew he was the only link between Mike Molloy and Mason Connor.

At their last meeting, Connor had made it clear that he wanted no comebacks and would act instantly if he thought there was a possibility of Richardson being compromised. The businessman knew exactly what that would mean. Connor would arrange for that link to be removed and would see to it that he was killed.

It left him with no choice.

He had to deal with Molloy in the same way Mason Connor would. He intended to remove the threat.

Quite how he was going to do it, he didn’t know. He was a businessman, not a gangster.

As his problem seemed to be generating more questions than answers, he rubbed his eyes. When he removed his fingers, he saw that the front door of Molloy’s house had opened.

He watched as the private detective stepped outside, closed and locked the door. He walked past his car on the drive and continued up the street.

Richardson gave him a good head start and then followed slowly in his Range Rover.

It was obviously a route known well by Molloy. He left the estate, then walked along a dimly lit stretch of road that had no pavements, just grass verges on either side.
