I came back to my apartment at eight o’clock that night. My people-organ was on life support after today. No people. No more people. No more picky parents who could not be satisfied.

I wanted pizza, a book, and cozy clothes. That’s all. Anything else, including laundry, could just jump off a cliff.

Five steps from my apartment building’s door, all thought shuddered to a stop. My wandering ghost friend, the one who liked to walk me from car to apartment, was visibly agitated. Tao and I had become buddies the week I moved into the apartment, as I’d offered him some rice wine and snacks. He always escorted me in and out since then. Usually he was a pretty chill guy, but right now he looked beyond frazzled. Tao rushed toward me, speaking a mile a minute as he did.

“Kris, you shouldn’t go up there. Call someone first. Call the police.”

“Why?” My pulse skyrocketed. “What happened?”

“I don’t know who it was, but some man tried to break into your apartment today.” Tao was a little guy, maybe five-and-a-half feet, and he wrung his hands together, shifting from foot to foot like he wasn’t sure if fight or flight was the best option. “I scared him off, he didn’t get through the door, but it’s dangerous.”

Someone…tried to break into my apartment? The hell?!

I snapped around, frantically looking for the darkest patch of shadow I could see. There, in the corner of the building. “Guo!”

The huodou practically flew out of the corner, materializing smoothly onto his feet. His tail lashed behind him as he trotted to me.

“What is it?” he demanded, voice rumbling.

I introduced the two quickly. “Guo, this is Tao, he’s a friend of mine. He watches my place for me sometimes. He said someone tried to break into my apartment today.”

Tao looked unnerved to be face-to-face with a legendary creature that liked to set things on fire, but rallied. “I scared him off. I don’t know who it was, though.”

Guo did not look happy to hear this. His lips curled up in a snarl. “I sensed someone watching you earlier but lost his trail when you went into the big house.”

Oh shit. That hadn’t been my imagination, then? Someone actually had been watching? I did not find this comforting whatsoever. I also felt very, very exposed standing here in the middle of a parking lot. That seemed like a really stupid idea.

“I think I’m going to retreat to the car. Lock myself in.”

Guo nodded in support of this. “Yes. I will guard you. Do not fear, Kris, the pack will be called to guard you tonight.”

“That really does make me feel better, thanks.”

“Call the demon slayer,” he instructed.

“Um.” Wouldn’t Detective Romero be the best person to call in this situation?

Then again, I’d feel safer with Zhen nearby, so maybe Guo had a point there. I’d just call them both; Romero needed to know about this anyway.

“Yeah,” I said faintly. I pivoted toward my car, digging my phone out of my purse as I moved at a jog.
