"So let's think this through." I sipped the Lava Flow cocktail as I fiddled with the pen. "I need to make a list."
Alani handed me a napkin. "Who are our suspects so far?"
"Well, there's Jamieson Fairchild. He said that Vivienne was a bully. Personally, I don't see that as a big enough reason to kill someone though."
"He could have a bigger reason that he hasn't told us about yet."
"True. And for reasons unknown, Margot Banks pointed the finger at him too."
"I'm not sure about you, but I wasn't convinced that she was telling the whole truth."
"Yeah. Did you notice how high her voice got when she told us about the photos?"
"Do you think she was lying about them?" Alani asked.
"I'm not sure. There were times I believed her and times that I didn't. I mean, her husband wouldn't be the first senator who was found sleeping around."
"But Margot said it was all a lie. There was no photo."
"Why would Vivienne think she could get away with blackmail if there was no real photo? As much as I'm learning that she wasn't popular, it seemed she was smart. Plus, if there was no evidence why would Margot care?"
"There was no photo in that file that she kept, and if she had one you would think it would be there. After all, that's where she kept the evidence against Whitney."
"Maybe Margot Banks paid her off and got the photo back," I considered.
"Maybe."
"We can't forget that she's also Rhiannon's mother. I'd originally wondered if a mother would kill to help her child, but I'm unconvinced that Rhiannon's career was that important."
"Maybe it was a culminative thing. Vivienne was blackmailing her husband and stealing her daughter's hard-earned source of income."
"Yeah, that would make her pretty unpopular." I fiddled with the napkin as I thought it over from all angles. "We can't forget about Rhiannon either. We know that Vivienne had stolen work from her before and nearly destroyed her business. And it appeared that Vivienne had her sights on Kennedy King, which is why she blackmailed Whitney into hiring her for your event."
"But we have that photo of Margot Banks arguing just before the time of death. She definitely has motive."
I was rubbing my eyes with my fists, wondering yet again just how Detective Ray did this for a living, when Casey sauntered across the room towards me, his jeans slung low on his hips, looking as sexy as heck. I hurriedly scrunched the napkin and shoved it into my pocket, hoping the heat racing up my neck wouldn't give away the fact that I was doing exactly what he had asked me not to.
"Hey gorgeous," he said, his smile small and intimate despite the crowded room.
I still had no idea if he knew of his mother's message, but as he closed the gap between us and placed a delicate kiss filled with promise on my lips, I knew now wasn't the time to ask.
"I've missed you," I whispered as he pulled back just far enough that I could get lost in the electric blue depths of his eyes.
