A little group of fans had congregated outside the theatre’s stage door.

“Jason!” It was Lynn, with a very worried look on her face. “Is your mum all right? We saw her being helped into a taxi. She looked awful.”

“Just a touch of food poisoning,” I said, repeating the official line. “She’ll be OK tomorrow. Oxford’s still a go.”

“Please give her my best wishes.”

“I will,” I promised.

Lynn hesitated, as if she wanted to tell me something else. I remembered what Jilly had said.

“I wonder,” I said, carefully, “if you might know anything about what happened to me yesterday on the river.”

Lynn looked distinctly uncomfortable. Her eyes darted to the other fans, who were lingering nearby.

“Let’s go over there,” I suggested, nodding at a corner of the little alleyway, next to an adjacent building. “It’s quieter.”

Lynn followed Katey and me to the darkened doorway. A street light shone down on us, making the area look like the cover of a noir crime novel. I half-expected a mysterious woman in a fedora, raincoat and fishnet stockings to step out of the night with an unlit cigarette, asking for a match.

“You went punting,” Lynn said.

I knew I’d put her on the spot.

“Did you see us?” I asked.

Lynn nodded.

“Where were you?”

“I was on the bridge.”

“Which one? Magdalene?”

Lynn nodded again.

“And did you see what happened just before we got to the bridge?”

That look of unease again. “You fell into the river.”

“Actually, I was attacked. By two women in a canoe.”

“Yes,” Lynn said, after a moment.

“So you saw them hit me.”

Lynn nodded a third time. Reluctantly.

“Do you know who they were?”

Lynn shook her head.

“I have a name. Jacqueline Bolton.”

A moment’s hesitation. Then: “I don’t know who she is. I’m so sorry.”

I didn’t believe her.

“I’m really sorry, Jason—I must go. I’m really glad you’re all right. All the best to your mum.”
