Chapter 17: Ignitaâs Roar
OVERNIGHT, A SOAKING RAIN arrived. By shifting and curving his body, Thundersong created himself a puddle in the courtyard where he had slept and drank deeply. Aye. He must remind his kin that their fire could run out if they did not keep properly hydrated. Having lived over ninety-nine percent of their lives immersed in water, the Sea Dragons might not imagine this scenario.
Azania popped out of the castle to let him know that Inzashu-Nâshula had a team of royal servants scouring the town for certain herbs she was low on. By the time this job was accomplished, the Princess roused him from a very pleasant dream about cosying up to Aria, and the rain had stopped.
She reported that another hawk message had come in. Azania gave a very un-princess-like caper and a fist pump. âThe reign of King Tyloric has ended!â
YEEEERRRSSSS!! he thundered.
Three windows up in the castleâs turrets shattered at the reverberation. Glass tinkled down.
âDragon, any chance we could think before we bellow?â
Gnarr-t a chance.
âI understand perfectly. Anyways, it is the best news since Ignis and Taramis decided to smile upon Solixambria.â
He displayed at least fifty fangs in a grin so huge, the stretch caused his jaw joint to pop loudly. âWhoâs the replacement, may I ask?â
âLord Harikic, who happens to be married to Queen Sharizaâs younger sister, Immiriza.â
âWhat is it with Humans and rhyming names?â
âWhat is it with Dragons and silly Clan names, like Crusher, Grinder or Obliterator?â
âThatâs what they do.â
âSo practical,â she teased, inflicting a hug upon him. âIs it bad of me to feel vindicated? Before you ask, this man is a very different prospect. He ââ
âKnows what a bathtub is?â
Consumed by a fit of helpless giggles, she gasped, âDragon, I love you!â
âOh dear. Does Azerim know heâs lost your affections?â
âNot like that, you ridiculous reptile.â
Placing his right fist over his heart, he moaned in a high-pitched, knightly voice, âOh, say it not, Azania, my verimost muse, for I have loved thee most fulsomely since the very first day I clapped paw upon thy peerless person! Woe, thou breakest at least one of mine five hearts. How shall this scorned creature ever become whole again?â
This was too much for the Princess. She guffawed so hard that tears sprang into her eyes. She folded up in his paw, apparently unable to stand. He eyed the girl wriggling in his paw in a perfectly undignified state of hysterics. Ah, so this would be ârolling with laughterâ in Human parlance. The problem was that it was catching. What was it about yawns and laughter that was more infectious than the worst disease imaginable? Very soon, his roars of mirth shook the castle. Another two windows gave up the unequal battle and dropped their leaded glass into the courtyard with a loud crash.
Inzashu, the Prince and at least twenty servants rushed out to see what the commotion was all about.
âCelebrating Tyloricâs downfall,â Azania managed to explain between hiccoughs.
Thundersong said, âThis would be the same Tyloric who
