Chapter Six – Going Extremely Slow

IF SHE WASN’T MISTAKEN, the sounds of the 1960’s band America sang in the background was about a man on a journey through barren lands on a nameless horse. Maybe she was dreaming, but the moment Jazzy turned over in the king-size bed, the aches and pains in her body screamed out in protest as if she too had taken a ride on a horse named Justin. Aches in the back, neck, and everything in between throbbed in remembrance of him finally claiming her body.

“Them dammed romance books be lying,” she mumbled, groaning over the sore legs and aching innards. “How those wenches lost their virginity and then rode a horse is some bullshit. My asshole even hurts, and the man didn’t even touch that.”

Coffee. She needed coffee, followed by a hot cup of tea, a stack of pancakes, three sausages and another cup of coffee. Her hand slid to his side of the bed that had long since been cold. Jazzy assumed that the music was Justin.

Grudgingly, she sat upright, attempting to swing her legs from the bed, wincing from the soreness of last night’s lovemaking. She was grateful he hadn’t wanted to do it more than once because she wasn’t sure she could handle a second round so soon. Her pajama pants lay across the bottom of the bed along with a long sleeve flannel shirt that belonged to Justin. Slipping the items on, she tiptoed down the stairs in oversized wool socks, arriving in the kitchen to find him singing along with the song as he cracked eggs in a bowl.

Surprised by her arrival, he flashed her the most brilliant smile, and she swore his chest stuck out a few inches.

“Good morning, beautiful,” Justin said, pulling out a chair for her. He planted a sloppy wet kiss on her lips before handing her a cup of hot coffee.

“You’re in a great mood this morning,” she replied, holding the cup and inhaling the scent.

“Of course I am. Last night, I was given a precious gift that was saved just for me,” he said with a wink. “Jazzy, where to start this conversation is blowing my mind, so I figured if you know... there was food, it would make it easier.”

“The conversation isn’t difficult,” she spoke into the cup. “I didn’t really date in college because of the awkward black girl thing as well as the crazy hair. My first contract came my senior year at Spellman, and I went on the road after that. Then, I followed that with another number one bestseller, a tour to Europe, another book, off to Australia. There was never time to develop a relationship, so I didn’t.”

“Shit, I liked it better when I thought you saved yourself for me,” he said, whisking the eggs in the bowl followed by salt, pepper, parsley flakes, and a bit of milk.

“Justin, I saved myself for love and the right man,” she told him. “I guess that makes both...you.”

“I’ll take it,” he said with a smile.
