Chapter 20

I wished I had Grayson’s night vision binoculars on hand. With the lights in my apartment turned off, I checked out the eastern window with my regular binoculars to see if I could tell if the police were still watching the gristmill. Unfortunately, it was too dark for me to tell if anyone was parked in the brewery’s driveway. I checked out all the other windows as well, in case I spotted a surveillance vehicle stationed in a different location. The streets were empty and quiet. That didn’t mean the police weren’t out there, but I was going to proceed on the assumption that they were parked in the brewery’s driveway, watching from the east.

As with the last time I’d sneaked out at night, I dressed in dark clothing. This time I remembered to wear gloves, and I added a black winter hat to the ensemble to help keep my ears warm. I tucked my keys, mini flashlight, and phone into the pocket of my hoodie and crept out of the gristmill through the pub’s main door on the western side of the building. Cautiously, I slipped past the maple trees and into the neighboring backyard. Once again, I wished Grayson had taught me how to pick locks. That would have made the next step of my plan easier. I knew the teenagers had managed to get into the vacant house, but I didn’t know how they’d done so. I hoped it wasn’t through the front door. I’d feel far too exposed going that route.

I started with the back door. I expected it to be locked, so I wasn’t surprised to find that was the case. There were two windows I could reach from the back porch. I tried opening them, but neither would budge. I wasn’t going to risk breaking a limb by trying to scale up to the second-story windows. Most likely those were locked too. While it was possible that one or more of the teens had been adventurous enough to get inside through an upper window, I thought it more likely that they’d found an easier way in.

Sticking to the darkest of shadows, I made my way around to the western side of the house, where there were two first-floor windows. Unfortunately, the porch didn’t wrap around the house and I couldn’t quite touch the windowsill with the tips of my fingers even when I reached as far as I could over my head. The window closest to me was shut all the way, but as I drew closer to the other window, I noticed that it was open a crack. A maple tree grew next to the house, with one sturdy looking branch reaching close to the window. Maybe the teenagers hadn’t scaled the house, but it seemed likely that at least one of them had climbed the tree. It looked as though I would have to do the same.

I made sure that my keys and phone were sitting in the deepest part of my pocket and then grabbed hold of the lowest branch and hauled myself up into the tree.
