Chapter 25

They were walking back; James’ arm thrown lightly across the medicine woman’s shoulders, her hair lying loosely across his skin.

Her real arm stretched around his back, playing lightly across the surface of his still growing limb.

She had told him to work on flexing it, trying to open and close it as if it was his real hand; he had to gain control and familiarity with it now, while it was growing.

The sensation of it as a part of his body had started to seep into his mind as it started to twitch and shiver to his commands, beginning to cooperate with his intended motions.

He could just barely feel the indentation of the fragile structure where her fingers played against it.

It was still odd for him to hold her, a woman nearly as tall as him, who was almost as large and muscled as him; but she felt so comfortable, all hard muscles and soft curves tucked under his arm, against his side.

“So how do I know what I am doing – or where to send the energy?”

She was explaining to him how to work the magic that he had started to be able to control.

Most of her words made some sense – everyone in the academy had had to take rudimentary lectures on runesmithing – but he found it almost impossible to apply what she was explaining.

“Don’t worry about that now. Everyone learns different patterns for identifying what they are doing with their energy; which skill or working of magic they are using, where they are applying it, how much power or force they are feeding it – for now just work on familiarizing yourself with control over it.”

He could move his own magic a little bit, like an imaginary muscle. Get the weight of it to slosh about within his Bond wrapped core, or pull small amounts of it out.

But it always withered and evaporated when he tried to disconnect it from his center, or snapped forcefully back to his center if he tried to pull too much out.

The energy of his Bond was more cooperative; moving easily to his commands; but it seemed almost inert.

He could get the bond to cooperate easily, but it wasn’t his energy, it did what it did and seemed impossible for him to apply to anything beyond its current purpose of tying his center to Al’theia, (still deep in the regenerative coma that dragons and drakes used to heal.)

“Meditation, spending a long time just moving with your energy, feeling out its moods and movements, how it responds and cooperates, will help you gain more control. Until then, just try to work with it – familiarize yourself with it, figure out what it can do, get comfortable. Eventually you will find a way of imagining your energy and communicating with it that will work for you. Everyone has different methods."

She rested a hand lightly on her breast. "Mine… I imagine each of my general types of magic as a different plant; and each
