In the next chapter, we will look at the astounding research of Drs. Wells and Wagner—pioneers in the study of how music affects the canine nervous system.

Breakthrough Research

Recording the four classical CDs for dogs involved the same psychoacoustic principles used in recordings proven to provide deep human relaxation. Our belief is that there is a cost to the nervous and immune system for all sensory analysis, and when we are stressed or not well, we have little energy to spare. Yet, Dr. Alfred Tomatis also taught that sound is a vital and nutritive energy, important for healthy nervous system function.1 Consequently, years have been spent trying to find ways to provide life-enhancing sound with a minimal depletion of the nervous system. As noted earlier, this concept is called simple sound.

When we first considered recording music for dogs, we had absolutely no idea if human brainwave states and heart rates corresponded in any way to that of the canine range. However, based on initial research, it seemed a good bet that what affected humans would have some kind of effect on dogs as well. We just did not know the extent.

From previous studies, we understood music did, in fact, have an effect on companion and farm animals. The value of auditory enrichment had been researched with a variety of species, including horses, cattle, birds, and primates. However, we were surprised to see that only one canine-specific study had been conducted.
