Two days had passed since I saw the Night Garden with Aeson. Two days since I’d spoken a word to any of the hounds. They just sort of hovered around me when I left my room, but none of us ever spoke.

I’d busied myself with more studying, courtesy of Celeste, Lyra, and the never-ending supply of heavy tomes they left me with every evening. I stayed up late, forgoing sleep just to read more about previous queens and their adventures with their hounds. My heart was heavy as I got to know more about my ancestors. Every story I read was like something out of a fairytale. Epic loves, heroes, heroines, and battles to save the kingdom.

It made my situation seem all the more bleak. I was the only queen-to-be in history to have been raised outside of the Crimson Court. The only one to grow up thinking she was a human, and definitely the only one who’d gotten herself captured by a demon slaver and sentenced to fight for my life in the arena.

At night when I couldn’t bring myself to read anymore and I felt like my eyes were crossing, I found myself thinking back to those lonely days in the cells. It was dark and damp in there and I didn’t think I could ever forget the thick smell of death that seemed to hover around me. It was burned into my nose and the filth was rubbed permanently into my skin.

I stood up from my vanity after dressing and brushing my hair out. The funeral for my mother and her hounds was in a few hours. My stomach was tossing and turning just thinking about it. A ceremony was being held in the Night Garden and all the noble or influential vampires were attending.

Opening the balcony doors, I breathed in that sweet smell of jasmine I’d come to love so much since getting here. The view down below was always the same since this cavern never got any sunlight. Everything sparkled in shades of purple, pinks, and blues, reminding me of a galaxy of stars. I could see vampires arriving at the castle down below in ornate carriages pulled by beautiful horses with long flowing manes. Women dressed in jewels and men in waistcoats stepped out arm in arm, solemnly heading inside.

I knew some of them a little better now. Over the last two days a few members of my small council had paid visits to the castle on business. I still needed to have my coronation, but I was still the reigning monarch, and that meant I had a lot of paperwork to sign off on. The shifting of power was complicated, and I’d spent more than a few hours sitting around tables chatting with strangers about things I’d never heard of. Luckily, I had the twins by my side to help me along. I trusted that they wouldn’t make me look like an idiot.

We discussed trade agreements with the four fae kings of Avalon, one of them being King Helio.
