CHAPTER 7

In the bathroom Dee puts Cornelius in the sink and studies her reflection in the mirror. Her outfit, which looked so fun and funky at home, just looks childish to her now. Beetlejuice chic—what was she thinking? Humans only dress like Beetlejuice to go trick-or-treating, and even then they don’t add sparkles and tutus. Of course those girls were going to laugh at her.

Afraid to get caught breaking the rules by using magic, Dee tries to shake some of the sparkles out of her hair. Then she yanks at the green taffeta lining of her tutu. None of it does any good. She still feels as silly as she looks.

She lets out a frustrated huff. How is she supposed to work in the human world as a meteorologist if she can’t even blend in for a couple of hours at a school dance? Not for the first time, she’s jealous of Bella’s aspirations to be the next Bloody Mary. More specifically, she’s jealous of her sister’s certainty. Bella is meant for scaring, the same way a fish is meant for swimming or a ghoul for haunting. Dee’s purpose in life is still much less certain.

She hears Crypta’s voice again, seeming to echo throughout the room. You’re never going to fit in with us.

With Cornelius occupying the sink in front of her, she moves over to the next one and splashes cold water onto her face. Then she looks at herself in the mirror again.

“Bella is going to be Bloody Mary,” she says, her hands gripping either side of the sink. “What will I be?”

In the mirror a figure appears behind Dee. She’s wearing a dirty, tattered nightgown, and her long, dark hair hangs menacingly over her face. Dee jumps and then glances behind her. There’s nobody there.

“Donna Maleficent,” the figure in the mirror croaks. “How may I assist you this evening?”

“Bloody Mary?” Dee asks, surprised. She leans closer to the mirror, so close that her nose almost touches it. “What are you doing here?”

Mary tilts her head to the left. “Whatever do you mean, child? You summoned me.”

“Oh,” Dee says, confused. She didn’t mean to summon anyone. She only said Mary’s name once, under her breath, when the lore clearly states you’re supposed to say it ten times, with the lights off and a candle burning. She knows because she has seen Bella try it over and over. Could the lore be mistaken?

“Well?” Mary says, impatient. “Do you want my assistance or not?”

Dee looks at Cornelius. His eyes are wide as he stares into the mirror. He sees Mary too, but he doesn’t seem afraid. Just alert.

Dee looks at Mary again. “Sure, I guess. But don’t you have scaring to do?”

“Eh.” Mary shrugs. “Slow night.”

“Huh.” Dee thinks about Bella. “My sister is not going to believe this. She’s kind of your biggest fan.” She glances toward the door. “Could I maybe go get her?”

Mary shakes her head. “Only one at a time. That’s the way it works.”

Dee frowns. Now Mary wants to follow the rules.
