CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Reg wasn’t sure what to say to Jessup to get her to agree to come to the house where her mother could try to talk to her. It didn’t feel right to tell her that it was about something else and let Lily ambush her. But she already knew that Jessup wouldn’t accept that Lily’s ghost was there. They’d already been through all of that.

But, as it turned out, she didn’t have to lie about it. She waited until later in the day, putting it off as long as she could under the pretense that it was because Jessup would have a better chance of seeing her mother later in the day, but really she was just procrastinating. She tapped Jessup’s number on the phone, frowning as she tried to figure out what to say.

“Reg! I’m glad you called!”

“Oh… did you need something?”

“Well… I hate to be a bother, but with this case…” Jessup trailed off.

“What about it?”

“I know that you didn’t have anything to do with Corvin’s reaction to whatever was in his drink. That’s not your style and it doesn’t make any sense that you would do something like that in front of an audience.”

“Uh-huh.”

“But… my boss, you know. He wants me to pursue it further. To get an official statement, ask you all of the tough questions… I just need to touch all the bases.”

“He thinks I did it.”

“No… just that you are a strong person of interest. You were there and the two of you have a past. You know. Whatever hurt him was in the drink that the waitress brought him from the mysterious Mr. X. Whoever sent that drink went to a lot of trouble to get in and out of the club without detection, and he signed the chit ‘justice,’ so clearly this is someone who was out to harm Hunter. It isn’t a coincidence that someone sent him a drink, putting ‘justice’ on the form, and he just happened to react to something within seconds of drinking that drink.”

Reg nodded her agreement even though Jessup couldn’t see her. “It doesn’t make sense that it was someone else.”

“Right,” Jessup agreed. “But I still have to come and talk to you. Just to say that I did, and I’ll tell them that I don’t think you’re the one who did it. It would be great if you had some kind of alibi, but I know you don’t, sitting at the same table as Hunter.”

“So you want to come here to talk to me about it,” Reg said flatly.

“Well, I’d rather you came into the station, actually, to make a formal statement…”

“No. You come here or no deal,” Reg insisted. She knew that Jessup would take advantage of the opportunity, and she was right.

“Yes, yes, if you like, I’ll come there,” she agreed.

“Good. I mean, I guess that would be okay. Are you coming over now?”

“Yes. Unless you’re in the middle of making dinner…” Jessup laughed. “Or ordering dinner, since I don’t think I’ve actually seen you make anything yet.
