CHAPTER 32

“Dear Lord in heaven above, will this harassment never end?” Ailish Hoagett moaned. She brought a sheet of kitchen roll to her eyes. “I thought Declan was out of my life forever. Tell them, Deeks. Tell them I...we’ve not had nothing to do with that horrible, flimmin loser for ages.”

Furious at having been roused out of bed so early on a Saturday morning, career criminal Deeks Sharkey placed a hand on hers and gave it a little rub. He glared at McLaughlin and D’Arcy perched on stools opposite them across the breakfast bar of the shiny silver surfaces of the kitchen.

Larger than my living room and kitchen combined, McLaughlin was thinking. Crime apparently did pay on occasion.

The menace was coming off Sharkey in waves. McLaughlin braced himself against it, tried to ignore the threat in the man’s eyes.

Hopefully, Organized Crime—if not their own investigation—would soon hack away at Sharkey’s empire, send it crashing down.

McLaughlin had sat across many such hard men before. Closely-cropped hair, almost a skinhead, expensive leather jacket, gaudy rings on permanently-clenched fists, head cocked at if he knew more than you, as if poised for a sudden brutal head butt, a sneer always on his thin lips. Fifty-year-old Deeks Sharkey kept himself fit, had bulked up, arms bulging, chiseled pecs straining his black Derry FC polo shirt, but the passage of time had let itself be known. The sides of the stubbly black hair on his head were gray. Evidence of heavy drinking and maybe some drug use was etched on his crow’s feet, on his furrowed brow. Ailish Hoagett was pressed against him.

“I’m sorry about that, ma’am,” McLaughlin said. “Indeed, we only came here for a word with Mr. Sharkey, but as you happened to be here... You’re free to leave if you’d like.”

Ailish rose half an inch, then caught herself. She cast a questioning glance at Sharkey, torn between bolting from her stool and staying to stand by her man. Stand by her man by sitting next to him.

A woman trapped, Ailish flustered, ran shaking fingers through her hair. Looked ashamed. Cleared her throat and eyed the detectives defiantly.

“I’m staying.”

Sharkey flashed her a look that clearly said, ‘You’d better had.’

“Er... Why would you want to speak to my Deeks about my ex, but? They don’t know each other at all.” She turned to Sharkey, hoping to appease him. “That’s right, isn’t it, love? Never set eyes on him before?”

The knuckles of Sharkey’s two fists on the bar were white.

“Never.” His even, low voice would bring a chill down a back more than a roar might.

McLaughlin’s mind was racing. Sharkey lived a life of luxury, Ailish Hoagett was still slogging away at the Sav-U-Mor. One of the rings digging into the man’s bloated fingers was worth twenty times the woman’s entire outfit combined. Sharkey had maybe lavished his body on Ailish Hoagett, but had yet to lay his love on her, or spend a pound of his ill-gotten gains on her. Well, no stranger to
