CHAPTER 13

After she’d finished talking to a very upset and emotional Amethyst, Mia’s phone rang again. “Hello?”

“Mia, dear, I know Amethyst just called you, but please, keep going with the wedding planning. We are going to get these two married if it kills me and Drunder. I’m sure this whole arrest thing is nothing more than a smoke screen. There are people who don’t want my daughter marrying a McMann. And those people will stop at nothing. But as the Goddess is my witness, we are having a wedding on Saturday and everyone’s going to be happy and have fun. It’s costing me enough, that’s the least they can do, right?”

“But Mrs. Uzzi, if your family needs to deal with your husband’s issues, maybe . . .”

“Phst, don’t worry about Drunder. You can’t be convicted of something you didn’t do, now can you?” Cassandra paused, apparently listening to another conversation. “You just have everything ready for the rehearsal on Friday. I’ll make sure everyone’s there. Including my husband.”

Mia set down her phone after seeing that Cassandra had ended the call. She sipped her iced tea and didn’t say anything until the buzzing in her head stopped ringing. “Well, they paid for a wedding. I guess I’m going to have it ready for them. I just hope we have a bride and groom that day.”

“At least you have a limo to take them to the airport now.” Trent sat and piled potato salad on his plate, handing the container to Mia. “This was made in-store. Mom’s recipe.”

“Actually, the potato salad is my Aunt Tilly’s recipe. She was such a good cook. I’m sorry she’s not around to meet you, Mia. I’m sure the two of you would have had a lot in common.” Abigail held up the container of macaroni salad. “Now, this is my recipe. Aunt Tilly’s macaroni salad had mustard in it. I’m not much of a mustard fan.”

As they ate lunch, Mia’s thoughts were on the wedding and why someone was trying to stop it. Had Drunder killed Chelsea? That didn’t make any sense because he’d fired her a few days before. If she’d found out about Magic Springs’s worst-kept secret—that witches and well, now, shifters, were real—he or one of his family could have done a memory wipe and kept the more-experienced wedding planner. Instead, he’d fired her. Mia knew he’d thought Chelsea had been dipping into the wedding fund for her own use. Had Baldwin really arrested Drunder or just taken him down to the station for questioning? Too many unanswered questions.

“Penny for your thoughts.” Abigail broke into Mia’s mind chaos.

She looked down at her plate and realized she hadn’t touched any of her food. She picked up a fork and took a taste of Abigail’s macaroni salad, which Mia didn’t remember even putting on her plate. “Actually, I was thinking about the likelihood that Drunder killed Chelsea. It doesn’t make any sense. In a normal town if Drunder had a secret that Chelsea found out, he might have killed her.
