CHAPTER 23
I pulled into the small parking lot by the Sea Glass. There were two reserved spots. The one Vivi usually parked in was empty. There were lots of people out on the beach waiting for sunset. I slipped in the back door of the Sea Glass.
JoaquÃn was busy making drinks, Michael, his husband, sat at the bar across from him. Almost every table was full. I grabbed an apron and went to work.
âThanks, Chloe,â JoaquÃn said.
When all the drinks were served I sank on a stool next to Michael.
âJoaquÃn, you should have called me,â I said. âI thought Vivi was going to be here.â
âShe looked tired and it was slow, so I sent her home.â
It was a reminder of Viviâs age. She was so youthful in spirit and energy that Iâd forget she wasnât as young as me.
âThen the sunset viewers started streaming in, so I called Michael to come give me a hand.â
I gave Michael a quick kiss on the cheek. âYouâre the best.â
âHe is,â JoaquÃn hummed the Tina Turner song The Best.
I smiled at his Schittâs Creek reference where one character had sung the song to the other. Iâd watched the show over and over because it made me happy if I was feeling blue.
JoaquÃn leaned over the bar so he was closer. âWhat did you learn today?â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âCome on, Chloe, I may only have known you for seven months, but thatâs long enough to know if someone you care about is in trouble, youâre going to move heaven, hell, and earth to help them.â
My eyebrows popped up. I blustered for a minute trying to deny it. Itâs not how I pictured myself, but he had a point. I narrowed my eyes. âAnd who is it you think I care about?â I thought Iâd been playing it so cool with Rip. Well, maybe up until yesterday anyway. Iâd been flirty when other men came in.
JoaquÃn laughed and Michael joined in. They were starting to annoy me.
âI thought you were going to burst into flames when Rip walked in here yesterday,â JoaquÃn said.
I turned to Michael. âDo you have anything you want to add?â
He held up his hands. âNot me. I only know that every time Ripâs name comes up you get one of those dreamy looks on your face like starlets did in fifties movies.â
âNow Iâm Gidget?â Iâd loved watching those movies and the TV show with my grandmother. Gidget liked to be out on the water as much as I did and Iâd always admired her dogged determination, along with her taste in men. Ah, Moondoggie.
âIf the shortness fits,â Michael said with another laugh. âAnd you do kind of look like a short-haired Sally Fields when she played Gidget.â
That wasnât the first time Iâd heard that comparison. However, if they could tell I liked Rip, I must be losing my ability to not show my emotions.
âCome on, whatâd you find out?â JoaquÃn asked again. âIâll make you a happy drink.â
âThe happy drink first and then Iâll talk.
