* * *

We were two weeks outside of the wedding when the phone rang in Mom’s apartment.

“So, Dawn, you’re becoming a Trice?” A hail of laughter filled the line.

“Debra!” I yelled. “I see somebody got her invitation!”

By then we were talking maybe twice a year. I rarely asked her when she was going to stop dancing or when she was returning to school.

“My original best friend is going to have my name!” she said. “Who’da thunk it?”

“So, you thunk you can come?” When she didn’t answer immediately, I said, “I’d love to see you and you’ve got to meet David.”

“I’m going to try, okay, Dawn?”

“You promise?”

“Cross my heart. You’re buying a house?”

I’d scrawled a note in the margins of her invitation.

“We drove out the other night and there are no streetlights,” I said. “I knew there weren’t any sidewalks. But no streetlights? If I hadn’t promised to live there, I’d renege. Though, I have to say, that night sky, those stars? Lordy!”

Before we hung up, I asked her, “Are you keeping yourself safe?”

“I’m fine. All of this is just to make money for nursing school, Dawn. I really am going. And I won’t have to worry about student loans.”

“Debra, come on, girl. You’re smart and you can do more than this.”

“I’m going for real this time. Cross my heart.”
