I began the conversation by introducing myself as an investigator with the Kelvin Grey Detective Agency, and then I explained our agency had been hired to look into the murder of Representative Scott Riley.

Less than five minutes later, my instincts were confirmed, and I realized it wasn’t likely Darlene Knight could be the DK we were looking for.

For one thing, I had to jog her memory as to who Scott Riley was and how he was murdered. For another, she said her job in administrative accounting seldom put her in contact with any of the legislators at the capitol, and she claimed she couldn’t remember ever meeting Representative Riley.

Besides all that, she didn’t give off any of the telltale signs she was being dishonest about it, so I was at least ninety percent certain she was telling the truth.

As our conversation was winding down, I mentioned I was calling anyone at the capitol with the initials DK because of some information I came across on a legislative appointment calendar.

“Well then, Mr. Grey,” she said, “you should probably talk to Representative Danny Kane. When I worked there, the two of us were the only ones with the same initials in the Missouri State Capitol phone directory. I happen to know that because I decided to look up his name when I kept getting phone calls intended for him. More than likely, those initials on that calendar belonged to Danny Kane, and he’s the one who had the appointment with Representative Riley.”

“Yes, I’m beginning to think that myself.”
