In the early plans for the library, we strongly considered painting this room yellow. I’ve forever loved all the wonderful large yellow drawing rooms and conservatory rooms in English country houses; yet we were pulled to something richer here. Understanding from the Academy how the beautiful bright southern light travels across the garden where this room sits, I knew we could lean into a hushed, deeper color. This room called to be green. After much experimenting we settled on a dark ivy green for the walls called Southern Vine, and the reddish brown for the interior of the cases, called Townsend Harbor Brown. To make the room brighter and enunciate all the millwork, the cabinetry and casings for the bookshelves were then painted in a fawnlike, almost butterscotch, pale beige with a strié finish, still an heirloom combination with such a warm patina, as you would see in those yellow English drawing rooms. And then the room has its modern, loft-white floors to lighten things even more.
