THE MYTH:

THE US CONSTITUTION GAVE EVERYONE THE RIGHT TO VOTE.

THE FACTS:

There isn’t one word in the Constitution about who can vote. At that time, only white men who owned land were able to vote.

After a long time, every citizen did get the right to vote. The 15th Amendment, passed in 1870, gave African American men the right to vote. American women didn’t get the right to vote until the 19th Amendment was passed in 1919. Native Americans weren’t able to vote until 1924 (and some states didn’t allow them to vote until years later).
