Chapter 10
He felt her fingers curl into his and looked up to see the reason walking towards them.
âI know I'm your wife for a year but if she looks at me as if I donât exist, I'm going to scratch her eyes out,â she whispered. It was the end of January charity function that was being held at his hotel. Things were tentative between them ever since the unspoken agreement to spend every night sleeping in the same bed. But they didn't sleep most of the time. He would come home and after dinner, spend some time in his study doing some work and then would come up and climb into bed with her, reaching for her immediately. The lovemaking would leave them shaken to the core, the climax ripping them into shreds, and he would start all over again. He didn't say anything to her after, but she would fall asleep curled up in his arms.
He kept her hand firmly in his as he faced Caroline.
âDarling, how lovely to see you! I was just telling your mother and sister that I hope we top the mark that we made last year for the benefit. Do you remember when we attended togetherââ
âCaroline, you remember my wife Donna?â
Her face tightened as she looked at Donna, who had a wide smile on her face. âOf course she does. I'm very unforgettable. Now, if you would excuse us, my husband and I would like to go and take our seats.â Without waiting for the woman to respond, she tugged at Thomasâ hand and led him away.
âThat was very rude,â he murmured as he followed her to their table.
âWell you're always saying how rude I am,â she murmured. âSo, why stop now?â
He pulled the chair out for her and gave her a wry look. He was mellowing towards her, Donna realized. She was hanging on to the hope that there was something more than the extreme passion they shared and was desperately hoping that he would realize that they could have something great together. She greeted the rest of the people seated around the table, pleased that they were sitting with the Wellingtons, Takahashis and the Stones. The women fell into discussions immediately and left their husbands to discuss business.
Thomas found himself watching as she laughed at something one of the women said, and the way the laughter transformed her beautiful face. He was beginning to notice a lot of things about her. The dimples in her cheeks, the sparkle when she laughed and the fullness of her bottom lip that he couldn't get enough of. He couldn't get enough of her! He would reach for her as soon as he climbed into bed and had to force himself to stop making love to her so that she could get some sleep. He was constantly hard for herâsomething that had never happened to him before.
âYou host this thing every year, right?â Donna asked, looking at the women at her table. âHow much money are we talking about? Ballpark it, please.
