Summoned to Derek’s study, they walked at a brisk pace. They didn’t dare keep the prince waiting any longer. Roquelle couldn't help but chew on her bottom lip, tasting what was left of her lipstick. What possible reason could some prince of evil have for wanting to meet with her? She was new in town. An unknown; a nobody.

Roquelle mused that people at the soiree probably assumed she was already or was going to be Derek’s latest conquest. No one would guess she only came here to avoid angering the duke further. She only wanted to seduce her way out of trouble for making a mess in his territory. Even though her chances of leaving this mansion before she became entangled in secret war plans and ancient power struggles were dwindling, she remained hopeful. Please let this be a quick meet and greet.

Without a clue about what to expect, Roquelle mentally braced herself as best she could for what was next. Derek led the way to the study. He was once again holding her hand, tugging her along like a blind date. For someone who was always displeased by her, he sure could handle her with care when he felt like it. She’d been slammed against a wall, caressed, bitten, and held by him. One moment he was sweeping her off her feet on the dance floor and the next he was pulling her toward the only person that scared her more than him.

“Der—” Whatever plea Roquelle was forming died a swift death before it could be spoken.

Nothing could have prepared her for the specimen-under-a-microscope feeling she experienced when the doors opened—seemingly of their own accord—and Prince Bael looked her way. It only took a few moments for him to size her up. By the time she entered the study and stood before him, she could tell that he had already made up his mind about her. Without wasting another glance at her, he switched his focus to Derek—who curiously remained by her side.

Prince Bael’s face went from sulky to joyous in a matter of seconds. Finally, he spoke. In a gravelly voice that would put anyone on edge, he said, “Not bad, not bad at all.”

He spoke directly to Derek. Roquelle felt like she had instantly become another piece of furniture in the room. They were so focused on each other that she imagined she was fading away.

“I asked you to gather brilliant minds and mighty allies, and you have done just that. You said we'd be ready by tomorrow, and I see that my faith in you was not misplaced,” Prince Bael said with a satisfied grin that aged his weathered face further. “They won't know what hit them when we wreak havoc on their sleepy towns and docile lives!”

Derek replied, “On your orders, we will launch our coordinated attacks tomorrow night. It will seem like a sickness, and the humans will not be able to prove it was us. I have already removed the few knowledgeable humans we believed could anticipate or undo our attack.
