CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The rest of the afternoon was a much-needed breath of fresh air for Emily and the entire team. Even with one of their members recovering in a bed in Riot’s med bay, unable to do much for himself, let alone get up and walk around, they were all together again. The laughter and good-natured ribbing among fellow operators who’d overcome unbelievable odds together over the last year filled the empty spaces in the room. They made the time fly by faster than any of them expected.

Although they offered her the remnants of their takeout, Emily wasn’t hungry. Instead, she pulled one of the chairs up to Edgars’ bedside and sat there with him, joking around with the rest of them as Bravo Team tried to make the most of a terrible situation while they had the chance. Nobody mentioned a thing related to the epic failure of their last mission because there was no reason to.

Edgars had made it back to Riot and through the surgeries that allegedly came with incredibly high chances of him fully recovering and eventually walking again. Most importantly, he was alive. Emily soon had the urge to address it once. To make sure he knew how sorry she was and how dedicated she was to making things right again however she could.

Finding the right time for that without making it awkward for everybody seemed damn near impossible.

For as much of her personal life as Bravo Team didn’t know, Edgars already knew her better than the others. Even if he didn’t know what was causing it, he still picked up on her growing discomfort. He was probably the only person on the team who could say something about it without fear of Emily trying to start a fistfight over it—even if he hadn’t been lying in a recovery bed.

“You okay?” he asked her after all the food was gone and the trash thoroughly stuffed back into the plastic to-go bags to hide the evidence of Bravo’s slight rule-breaking in the med bay.

Still wearing a crooked smile, Emily looked away from the mock battle Wilson and Bam were in the middle of duking out over which professional wrestler would kick the other’s ass in a fight. Only when she found Edgars staring at her with half-lucid curiosity did she realize she must have given him a good reason to ask. “What? Yeah, man, I’m fucking peachy.”

He nodded toward the closed door and smirked. “The shitter’s right down the hall, by the way. Looks like you got a big one.”

It was supposed to be a joke, but he’d hit the nail on the head anyway. It wasn’t natural for either of them to call someone out by saying, “You look like something’s bothering you. Wanna talk?” Jokes were a lot easier. They always had been for Emily, and Edgars’ inherent ability to notice when she was joking for fun and when she was joking about serious shit had drawn them instantly toward each other.

She scoffed and playfully rolled her eyes, trying to keep the worst of her emotions at bay like she always had.
