And then there were the people in wet suits. You see, gas was cheaper in Turkey than in Syria, but diesel was actually more expensive in Turkey, or maybe it was the other way around, I don’t remember. Either way, people brought down barrels of fuel, tied them together, and floated them across the border. Diesel one way, gas the other. That’s how they did their business.

We loaded the ambulance full of medicine and drove to the pharmacies in the nearest towns. They often functioned as small clinics or hospitals as well, maybe with just one bed or two. Sometimes we also transported food to different rebel groups that were guarding the checkpoints. Back and forth, back and forth.
