SHAURYA
Jaipur
I sat there, shocked. Miraya had been through so much. Her life had unfolded like a rose. But when she gripped it tight, the thorns had torn into her soul and left her bleeding as all the petals fell to the ground. Tears welled in the corners of my eyes. I needed to talk to her and make up for being another sour point in her life when she was hurting so much from her life in Mumbai.
The lecture passed by like a leaf floating in a stream. None of the professor’s words reached my mind while I was looking so far ahead, waiting for time to inch forward so I could confront Miraya.
By the time I made it to the terrace of our building, I was breathless. I tried to calm myself, though I feared Miraya wouldn’t show, and the minutes felt like they were hours ticking by. My heart swelled as she finally came into the private space.
Rising to my fight, I took my chance to change both our lives. ‘Miraya, you need to change your life. Give it a second chance. The story of your life shouldn’t end on such a bitter note.’
‘Wh-what?’ She looked at me, lost in the words.
‘You left this in my bag.’ I handed the diary to her, holding my breath for the outrage I knew would come.
‘You … you read my diary!’ Jerking it from my hand, her jaw tightened with the rise of her anger. ‘How dare you! You have no right to do something like that! You, you …’
‘Miraya, I know … you have every right to be angry with me.’ My face was stern and it made her flinch. ‘Listen, I know everything now, I understand what’s been going on …’
‘How could you …’ Tears were starting to fall from her eyes.
‘You have to change your story. Don’t end it there with everything falling apart around you.’ I was fighting back my own tears. ‘You’re my friend, and to think such horrible things have come to pass in your life is heartbreaking. It was unexpected but you did what you could to fix it. You need to continue, change the ending … this, there in that book, this is not your story.’
‘You have no right to tell me this!’ She hugged her diary tight, shaking her head in denial. ‘Someone like you, who can’t follow his dream, can’t confess his love to Kasturi! You have no right to want to change my life; this is not your story, Shaurya.’
‘I … I am a coward, unlike you, Miraya.’ My shoulders slumped. ‘You have the power to change your life, but I have failed … you’ve seen that look on my face, watching the train.’
‘If you are brave enough to get to the station, why don’t you let yourself follow through?’ she hissed. ‘Instead you stood there like a fool even while I was struggling … and here you stand telling me what to do? You can’t even tell Kasturi how you feel about her!’
‘That has nothing to do with this …’ I balled up my fist.
