KATHY WAS THE OPPOSITE of a bridezilla. In fact, instead of breathing fire, she looked more relaxed with each passing day. She’d selected a dress, sent out invitations and chosen the catering. None of us could wait for the first week of June.

Tim was over the moon when I told him I’d secured the lakeside venue for the wedding. He kept asking me how I’d managed it. I wanted to tell him everything about Osiris, how he wasn’t the devious crook the town said he was, how he helped me, and how I felt invincible when he was around. But this was all for Tim and Kathy, so I held back my thoughts on Osiris and just smiled as he told Kathy how much he loved the place.

I hadn’t seen Osiris in four days, but he had organized maintenance of the lakeside area. On my first visit to map out the seating, the number of people working there had left me gobsmacked. It took me a good five minutes to gather the hutzpah to walk inside.

Now my visits were a daily occurrence. The overgrown greenery in the park was now neatly trimmed with cotton-candy shaped shrubs on the sidelines. The curtain of vines that led to the lake were left as they were, much to my relief. I really liked them the way they were. The workers all knew me by name, and it wasn’t a surprise that they were all courteous to me. I tried to extract information about Osiris from them, but they were all extremely loyal to him and kept their mouths shut.

I was sitting on a swing in the park when my phone chimed with eight consecutive texts. Before checking it, I just knew it was Waleeya. I lay my sketching pad to one side, grabbed the cell and swiped to read.

“I did it!! I talked to her. She nearly bit my head off when she saw the pictures. It’s a long story but it’s her dad. I told you he looked familiar, but I just couldn’t place him. We talked it out. I hope things get better now. I can’t thank you enough, Isla. I love you so, so much!!!!!!”

“I didn’t do it for the thank you, Waleeya. Love you too!” I replied with the biggest grin.

The Zoey-sized boulder sitting on my chest was finally lifted. Relief poured through every cell of mine. If she only knew who’d done it. My cell rang in my hand, and I answered the call.

“Hi, Noel!”

“You sound happy. Should I start cleaning my gun?”

I frowned. “Why?”

“You know, to scare off whoever you’re thinking of dating.” He ignored my laugh. “I’ll have to see if he passes the gun cleaning test and move on to the handshake. Then I’ll let him stay for dinner, maybe.”

“Cool your jets, Benny.” I chuckled. “Can’t I be happy without a man in my life?”

“I don’t care why you’re happy as long as you are happy.”

The earnestness in his voice made me even happier. I gripped the chain of the swing and grinned like a fool.
