Miller and Ryder had taken seats on either side of me, Fitz still seemed completely disinterested in the conversation, Gloria was nodding encouragingly at Sam to continue speaking and Anne was totally starstruck by the killer sitting across the table from her.

There were many types of fame, not all of them honorable, but Anne had obviously spent enough time researching the case that Sam was now describing that she couldn’t believe her luck to now be hearing the story firsthand.

“I’ve read some of your blogs,” Sam began. “We don’t get a huge about of internet time here, but I try to use it wisely.”

“I’m flattered,” Anne blushed. I probably needed to have a word with her after this was all over, it was as if she’d forgotten about all the murdering that had led Sam to this prison in the first place.

“I know you’ve pieced together the case from asking around, reading old papers, that sort of thing. I’ve got to hand it to you, realizing that the fourth murder was connected, the one a month before the others, that was impressive. Not even the police managed to figure that out.”

Gloria got a wild look in her eye and lunged her body forward, slapped a huge file down on the table and started flicking through the pages. “Sam, you’ve never spoken about a fourth murder before. This isn’t in your notes.”

“I told you, I’m finally free!” he smiled darkly. “I want the truth to be out there, on record, and having Anne here is a great way to get my story told.”

“That’s great, I’m thrilled,” Gloria sighed, “but are you about to confess to something here?”

“Yes. There are four murders in the cycle, and Anne figured that out,” he nodded. “I tried to speak to you earlier, Sadie, to let you know that the cycle had started again. I believe there was a fist fight that meant you had to leave.”

“Your name was crossed off the list,” I said.

“Ah, I think the guards are skeptical about my new enthusiasm for talking about my crimes. They think the timing is suspicious.”

“What do you mean?”

“I explained to them that the cycle had started again. I warned them that there would be three more deaths coming, but they didn’t listen. Now that a man has been killed, exactly as I anticipated, even down to the caliber of the bullet in the guy’s back, I seem to have their attention.”

“Do they think you’ve done this?” I asked.

“No. They know I’ve been trapped in here since the nineties, they have cameras in this place, guards, fences, the works. They think I might have been communicating with someone on the outside, sending cryptic letters or something. Well, they did think that, only they’ve since realized I haven’t sent a single correspondent since I got here.”

“That can’t be right,” I said, raising an eyebrow.

“I swear! The records don’t lie, Ms. Alden. I don’t get a whole lot of mail coming in either, just hate mail from the
