Chapter 8

The next morning, LaShaun sat on the window seat with a warm mug in one hand. Saturday had dawned into a beautiful, cool fall morning. She gazed out to the lovely woods that took up part of the property they owned. Ellie assented to spending the night with her great-aunt Shirleen and cousins with glee. Chase would pick her up sometime after lunch. Already on the phone with work, Chase walked into the kitchen. He kept talking to one of his deputies as he poured himself a third cup of strong coffee.

“Right. Right. A real shitstorm. Okay, see you in about thirty minutes.” Chase ended the call. He heaved a sigh and drank more coffee. “You okay?”

LaShaun had already gotten up and gone to the oven. She put his favorite on-the-go breakfast in a small insulated bag. For convenience on his busy days, LaShaun made up her own version of breakfast sandwiches: eggs, cheese, and andouille sausage. She kept them frozen.

“Here you go. Put it in the microwave if it gets cold. You’ll need something hot on your stomach.” She pushed it toward him across the counter-top surface. Then she sat on window seat again with her mug.

“Thanks.” Chase finished his coffee in silence. He rubbed his chin hard with one hand and sat next to her. “So, we gonna talk it out before I hit the road?”

“You take risks, run into danger even on a regular basis. But I don’t lecture you or point a finger.” LaShaun spoke without looking at him.

“It’s my job to run toward trouble instead of away from it.” Chase shook his head when she didn’t answer.

“The point is, I trust you. I don’t nag when you put in long hours or go into a house with armed thugs. Do I say, ‘Damn Chase. You’re a family man. Think about us before you decide to follow your instinct,’ ” LaShaun replied.

“You’re a private citizen, not a deputy, for one thing. At least one of us should be safe for Ellie. She doesn’t need both of her parents in danger. That’s all I’m saying.” Chase put a hand on her thigh.

“Ellie knows someone is at risk. You want me to teach her to ignore signs that someone is hurt or about to be hurt?” LaShaun put her hand over his. “She’s got these abilities. I need to help her use them responsibly. Having psychic abilities is a temptation.”

“Huh?”

“She can influence people to get what she wants. Matter of fact, we’re not sure how strong she is.” LaShaun continued when Chase wore a baffled expression. “If your child is taller and stronger than most kids his age, when he gets mad or is provoked, he can do more damage to smaller kids. Right?”

“Yeah.”

“Ellie has a strength that other kids don’t have. What if she’s bullied, another kid pushes her, or say she just decides she likes getting what she wants? We teach kids not to hit, call people names, and so on. Well, the same goes for kids with psychic abilities.
