The shift started at eight in the morning and finished by four, but the conditions were that if they needed her, she would have to stay later. It wasnât an imposition to Cecelia, she welcomed it. Strangely, the other staff working at the clinic were also single.
Being conscientious and as this was the beginning of her employment, Cecelia arrived early getting there at seven-thirty, she didnât want to put a foot wrong. A cellophane bag contained a white uniform eradicated from any dirt or germs, this was to be worn only on duty and was to be left in the clinic.
No one was allowed to wear the uniform outside of the clinic, and all hair was to be tied back from the face. No one was permitted to wear jewelry which included rings, and nor was perfume allowed. Short nails, no nail varnish. In fact, there was to be no sign of personality. No one was overweight because this was a sign of unhealthiness. Their shoes were flat, no heels permitted. No one was allowed to frown or look upset. The best look to have was a neutral expression.
Once Cecelia discovered she had been given the position at the clinic, she knew the tiny camera she had bought two years ago was going to come in handy. But with no pockets on her uniform, no belts or even wristwatches where personal items could be placed, a hiding place was going to be difficult. But like the other members of the caring staff, she was to wear a deaconess nurseâs hat. This would be the ideal place to secrete her camera.
But today, on her first day, she was expected to work with another staff member to get to know the duties. Her name was Samantha, Samantha Mantle. Samantha was in her early forties and she was still a beauty. Long golden colored hair and with her large blue eyes and a smile which lit up her face. Like Angelina, every hair was impeccably kept in place, smoothed and coiled up in a bun at the back of her head.
âWe cannot go in there,â Samantha pointed to the double heavy-duty hospital doors. âThis area to us is banned. If you go in there, you risk losing your job on the spot.â
âWhatâs in there?â Cecelia was tempted to peep through the small window.
âYou are not to ask or to know.â
âAre you serious?â Cecelia showed her incredulity.
âIf you want to keep your job, you have to abide by the rules,â and then she stopped to face Cecelia.
âWe are not paid to ask questions, thatâs why the money is good. Do you understand? No one here asks any questions, the person who answers them also faces getting fired.â
It was the sharp, cold slap of comprehension applied to Ceceliaâs face. Silence and fear were what kept this clinic working. If she didnât understand this, she was out. The cult conditions of the radical prevailed.
Her tasks were not important, but they were needed even if they were menial, it was all about helping the clinicâs clients.
