Scripts and Scripting
Tips for Using the Scripts Successfully
⢠Read the entire script before reading it to your students. This will help you know when you need a dramatic pause or a quick follow-up.
⢠Be patient with your students. Give them time to think. Many may have never had the opportunity before to think critically. These opportunities will help move them forward.
⢠Never give your opinion. Once you jump into the discussion with what you think, the ârightâ answer has been given, and student thinking and conversation will shut down.
⢠Wait time. Read the script/question and wait . . . quietly!
⢠Use the scripts as often as possible. Although there does not have to be a set curriculum or timeline, the more opportunities the students have to stop and think critically, the more improvements and risks you will see.
⢠Make this time special. Before beginning the scripts, have the students close their eyes and relax. This lets them know that something different is about to happen. It will seem silly at first but students quickly begin to enjoy this break.
⢠Think, pair, share. Sometimes students are more comfortable having time to write their ideas and sharing them with a partner or small group before sharing with the large group. This is true with difficult topics or when students are just beginning the process.
⢠Fit the scripts in as an introduction to a lesson or when waiting in line. There is no set time for critical thinking. You will find that some scripts will require a longer instructional time. Others are fun and can encourage your students to think critically while waiting for their turn in the restroom.
⢠Reuse some of the scripts at the end of the school year. This way you can really see the development of your studentsâ thinking.
