The warm rays of the autumn sun creeping through the partly closed bedroom window blinds caused Jack to awaken suddenly from his deep sleep. Leaning over to his left he picked up his gold Gucci watch from the low cream bedside table. Eventually focusing his eyes, he stirred at the watch face. “Christ it was eleven thirty-five, half the day had already gone.” Picking up his Sonny mobile phone which was next to his watch, he switched it on. Whatever had been wrong with him last night had cleared up, he felt quite normal. There were five messages from Pedro Gonzales. The first one was left at seven fifteen, and they all said the same, “Jack, pick up your mobile and call me back urgently.” Alarm bells started to ring in his head something was wrong.

Jack put a call through to Pedro who immediately answered. “I have been trying to contact you for several hours.”

“Sorry my phone was switched off, as I was trying to catch up on my sleep after Aslan’s fund raising party.”

“Jack, I have some terrible news.” Pedro came straight out with it. “Aslan’s friend George was found dead in the villa’s swimming pool in the early hours of this morning.” Jack never answered, he was shell shocked beyond belief. “Are you still there Jack?”

Jack stuttered as he spoke. “Yes, I am stuck for words. I find it hard to believe. What an earth has happened?”

“I received an emotional phone call from Aslan shortly before five thirty, asking me to come round to his villa. I went round immediately, as our two villas are only a few hundred metres apart, I quickly threw on some clothes and was there in less than ten minutes. George was floating face down in the swimming pool. He was wearing the light grey shorts he normally sleeps in. Aslan is unable to swim due to a serious war injury to his leg so I dived into the water and brought George to the side of the pool, where we both pulled him out. There was no sign of life. It was obvious to us that the poor guy was already dead. We immediately called the ambulance service and police who both arrived within minutes, even with their medical expertise and equipment, the paramedics could not detect any sign of life. They reckon that George had been in the water for at least an hour before he was found.

“How did Aslan react?”

“He was heartbroken. Aslan had gone to bed well before the party finished, leaving George in charge as he felt unwell. He actually never saw him alive again.”

Jack then told Pedro about George waving goodbye to him and Olga at the end of the evening and apologizing for Aslan’s absence.

“To be honest with you, the last hour was very strange. Aslan was in bed ill and I was heading the same way. I was having difficulty keeping awake and felt as though I had consumed far too much alcohol.”

“Had you drank too much?”

“No way, I am always very careful when I gig.
