Yeager’s defense—both his handling of pitchers and his arm behind the plate—was beyond reproach. The catcher had suffered a panoply of injuries over recent seasons, however, and his offensive output nosedived correspondingly: a .209 batting average in 1981 followed seasons of .211, .216, and .193. He was about to turn 33 and, with the end of his career visible on the horizon, had been thinking about the Yankees’ left-handers for more than a month, telling his teammates in September, “Just get me to the Series, just give me a chance to play.”

For Yeager, the feeling of being overlooked was familiar. Drafted a year before the storied class of 1968, he played minor league ball with some combination of Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey at each minor league level save for the Rookie League, and had been with them every step of the way for their record-breaking run of longevity in Los Angeles. Still, for reasons beyond his control Yeager was rarely mentioned when people spoke of the historically durable infield. Even within his own family he took a backseat to cousin Chuck Yeager, the U.S. Air Force pilot who became the first man to break the sound barrier, portrayed by actor Sam Shepard in an Oscar-winning role in the 1983 film The Right Stuff.*
