Chapter One

Kate stood there for a moment, unsure of how to react.

“If you only knew how many naked werewolves I’ve encountered at this lake recently,” she joked.

A tall, naked man stood a few feet away from her, and he looked horrified.

“How do you know that I’m a werewolf?”

“If you woke up in a shallow grave down there,” she said, pointing, “then you must be the werewolf we buried.”

He still looked confused. He tried to run a hand through his long dark hair and staggered.

Kate reached to help him, then pulled back. After all, he did attack Gerry and threaten her as well.

“You buried me?”

His knees nearly gave way completely this time and against her better judgment, Kate closed the distance between them.

He put one arm around her shoulders as he said, “Thank you.”

“Are you telling me you don’t remember anything?” she asked him.

He shook his head and immediately looked like he regretted doing so. There was a jagged pink line across his throat where Gerry had torn it out. His impressive physique was decorated with many pale scars that had faded almost completely.

“You said your name was Jeffrey Moore?”

“Yes,” he said, his voice sounding weaker. “And you say you buried me?”

“Well, not alone. Gerry did most of the work. Come on, I’ll help you inside, I can’t just leave you out here.”

“Thank you,” he repeated.

Kate wasn’t sure why she would trust him now, but she did. Something about Jeff clearly said he was not trying to hurt anyone. In fact, she was confused as to why he attacked them to begin with.

Jeffrey paused as she opened the door. “I’ve got dirt on me still,” he said.

“You can use the downstairs shower.”

He raised one dark brow. “You say that you helped to bury me in the woods, but you are willing to help me? How about we sit here on the deck and you refresh my memory on exactly what the hell I did to deserve to be tossed in a shallow grave? Then, I would love to use your shower, if the offer still stands.”

“You can barely stand, and you’re naked. At least let me get you a towel.”

“It’s dawn,” he said, looking around. “Who else will see me out here in the middle of nowhere? Unless my nudity offends you.” He made the last sound like a question.

“I’ve never been less offended. But you’d be surprised how many visitors we get. Luckily, my aunt is probably at the market by now, getting supplies for her restaurant.”

She helped him to a chair and left to grab a towel. Kate had no explanation as to why she would feel safe enough to be alone with him, but she did. What the hell was going on here?

Chapter Two

For a moment she wondered how to begin telling Jeff about last night. Then she realized, he did not need to know everything. After all, he was a stranger and this shit was complicated.

“I was down by the lake with my friend Gerry.
