One of the main points that Jerry and Dana learned well is that hearing is not the same thing as listening, even though those terms are often used interchangeably. When we think of communication, we often think of what we say, not how we listen. But good listening skills are one of the hallmarks of good communication and just as important as what you say.

Although hearing and listening go hand in hand and complement one another, in times of interpersonal conflict, the difference between them cannot be more apparent. Educating your clients regarding the difference will be helpful to them as they deal with problems in their relationships.

The following are some major differences between hearing and listening. These are a great springboard to use for role play when working with clients to improve their listening skills; it is especially effective in a couple’s session.
