Chapter Fifteen

The arrival of the flying doctor woke Eric from his fitful doze. An angel with curls of burnished copper was leaning over them before he could even contemplate untangling himself from Tyaan and getting to his feet.

From the look she graced them with—as if she had seen kittens frolicking in a field of buttercups—Eric could only assume that, despite the filth and gore, they looked cute together. Their hands were still entwined, after all, even if the interweaved fingers were caked in blood.

“Hi, you must be Eric. I’m Jessie, Ty’s flatmate.” She introduced herself as if they had just bumped into each other in the pub, but her eyes were already mapping Tyaan’s body and her hands were reaching for the blanket next to her bag.

“Okay, let’s get you up.” Her gaze drifted up to Eric’s face and beyond. “Might want to lose the elephants for a while.”

Summoning unknown reserves, or possibly just revived from his catnap, Eric sat up straight, supporting his own weight once again. He reached back with his free hand and patted Ianto on the rump, mumbling instructions in a low voice.

The ground beneath his arse trembled and then the warmth at his back disappeared. Snuffles and snorts accompanied the movements, and he glanced over his shoulder to watch his elephants trundle away, putting distance between themselves and all the human intrusion in their landscape.

“Right,” Jessie said, her mouth set in a determined line. She ran her hands up Tyaan’s neck, the backs of them pressing against Eric’s legs as she slipped them between their bodies to cradle Tyaan’s head. She moved her fingers over his scalp, searching and exploring as they went. “Slide out and pop the blanket under Ty’s head.”

Doing as instructed, Eric placed the blanket on the ground, holding it in place until Jessie had lowered Tyaan’s head onto it, and then he pushed himself to his feet. His legs felt wobbly, although whether that was from the position he had been sitting in or the sudden loss of adrenaline from his system, Eric didn’t know.

Jessie sucked in one of her cheeks and nodded to herself, then settled back on her heels. “I suspect the head injury is just a flesh wound. Lots of blood, ja?”

“Yeah.” Eric glanced down at his hands. They were covered in it. Tyaan’s blood. The rushing exodus of his own blood from his head left him dizzy and his cheeks cool and clammy. He swayed, suddenly uncertain on his feet, and the horizon shifted and swam alarmingly.

Suddenly Jessie was there, her hand on his arm. “Are you hurt?”

Eric shook his head. The bile was back. If he opened his mouth…

“Are you sure? There’s an awful lot of blood on you.”

Eric glanced down. The khaki of his shirt was almost unrecognisable, and his trousers were smeared with russet.

“It’s Tyaan’s.” His hand came up to his mouth as bitter liquid burnt its way up his throat. He spun away, staggering to the safety and comparative privacy of the jeep. Once there he could hold back no longer.
