Intentional: language is used to convey the speaker’s unique perspective on things, their reality. This maps to some extent onto what are sometimes called ‘standpoint’ theories (see Harding, 2004; Naples & Gurr, 2014) – we understand things uniquely; we use language to convey our truths.11 Intentional conceptualisations of language move away from universal meanings and locate meaning within the person; a mind-dependent truth.

11 The critical realist, contextualist, phenomenological and, to a lesser extent constructivist, theoretical frameworks we discuss in this chapter are loosely underpinned by intentional theorisations of language.

Key Concept Mind-dependent truths are truths that cannot exist without the knower.
